In 1983, he stood first in Kerala in Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination.[2] Two years later, he came out first in the predegree examination in MG University. Swamy obtained his bachelors degree in computer science and engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He also secured the first rank in the GATE. In 1991, he obtained the first rank in Civil Services Examination and entered the Indian Administrative Service. In August 2011, he was conferred the degree of doctor of philosophy by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
