On January 20th, 2026, ASSEDEL hosted a high-level roundtable at the European Parliament addressing one of the European Union’s most pressing dilemmas: Trade vs. Human Rights. The event was co-hosted with MEP Catarina Vieira (Greens/EFA, INTA & DROI) and brought together Lynn Boylan (MEP and Chair of the EP Delegation for Relations with Palestine), Alan Hervé (Professor of EU Law), Omar Mansour (Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic), Hélionor de Anzizu (Senior Attorney at CIEL), and Pichamon Yeopantong (Independent Expert, UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights) to examine the gap between the EU’s ethical rhetoric and its trade practices, particularly in contested contexts such as Palestine and Western Sahara. Key discussion themes: -Double standards in EU trade agreements, particularly with Israel and Morocco -Contested territories, with legal and ethical analysis of Palestine and Western Sahara -Accountability and enforcement, questioning whether corporate profit and geopolitics outweigh democratic values -The path forward, exploring whether ethical, human rights–based trade is achievable or merely symbolic 🎥 Watch the full discussion to explore how global economic interests collide with international law — and what this means for the EU's credibility as a normative global actor.
