The Mongol Horde, more precisely the Golden Horde (Ulus of Jochi) stands out as one of the most enduring and successful successors to Genghis Khan's vast empire. Founded by Batu Khan (grandson of Genghis) in the 1240s after devastating invasions into Eastern Europe, it dominated the steppes from the Volga to the Carpathians, subjugating the Rus' principalities into a long-lasting tributary system (the "Tatar Yoke" that shaped Russian history for centuries). At its peak under Özbeg Khan (r. 1313–1341), it was a powerhouse: controlling trade routes, adopting Islam, fostering cultural exchange, and projecting military might that made European kingdoms pay tribute and tremble. Unlike the Yuan Dynasty (which ruled China but fell in 1368 amid rebellions) or the Ilkhanate (which fragmented earlier in Persia), the Golden Horde endured far longer, its core influence lingered into the 15th–16th centuries, splintering into successor states like the Crimean, Kazan, and Astrakhan Khanates that still impacted Eastern Europe and Russia. Raw nomadic mobility, tribute extraction, and strategic longevity made it arguably the most resilient "horde" branch. Empires rose and fell, but the Golden Horde's shadow stretched across centuries.
