Always Be in Competition with Yourself

This is a message for all the creative people out there. I know your creativity comes from a burning passion, which makes it tough for you to read negative comments directed towards you or your work; but it happens to everyone. Here's how to deal with it. Nearly 20 years ago, as I was about to release my first book, Raise Your Voice, my mentor and vocal coach, Jim Gillette said to me, "Jaime as you grow in success people will bash you. They will also try to copy you. Don't worry about it because it comes from people who are jealous of your success, fear you as competition, or desire to copy your uniqueness. Instead of worrying about them as competition, BE IN COMPETITION WITH YOURSELF!" There's nothing wrong with being a competitive person. But, when you're in competition with yourself, you won't worry about all that trivial stuff. You'll become an original; and you'll be authentic. If you want to make your mark, it's about authenticity-it's about being an original. I've had my share of people criticizing my validity, sharing my vocal methods as if they were their own, and I've seen knockoffs of products I've helped develop. When this happens to you, don't get angry; take it as a form of flattery, because you are an original, and they are not your competition. Yes, at times you'll become aggravated. It's happened to me. But, if you remember to shoot for the stars like a rocket and stay in competition with yourself, you'll continue to keep your eye on the prize, create something unique and wonderful, and you'll reach your destination as an authentic original!
