Sepsis is a life-threatening condition, defined as an inflammatory response affecting the entire body triggered by a microbial infection. If a simple infection is left untreated, like a urinary tract infection, bacteria may use the opportunity to enter the bloodstream. This will trigger the immune system to release inflammatory factors to combat the infection, but these factors can cause the blood vessels to become leaky through vasodilation, and result in hypotension and shock. This then leads to tissues not receiving oxygen through the blood, which causes severe tissue and organ damage, and can lead to death. Treatment of sepsis includes getting a blood culture to find the offending microbe, then administering broad-spectrum antibiotics until the offending microbe is identified. Management includes maintain perfusion to the organ by administering fluids, vasopressors to increase blood pressure, and performing routine lab tests to ensure organs remain viable until the sepsis is resolved.
