The hikers were found by rescue workers near the summit of Japan's Mount Ontake, which erupted (pictured left) at noon on Friday. Some 550 soldiers, police officers and firefighters (pictured top and bottom right) were involved in the large-scale search-and-rescue operation in a bid to save those who were stranded on the volcano when it erupted with warning - spewing ash, rocks and steam into a sunny autumn weekend busy with tourists and hikers.
