Heading offshore on our Great Loop Adventure. The America's Great Loop is an amazing experience. Go Loopers!!! We left the free dock at Jim Kings boat ramp at Three Sisters Creek near Jacksonville. First we headed to fuel in Fernandina. While waiting our turn at the fuel dock we visited with other boaters. Once it was our turn we took on close to 700 gallons. We cruised out the St Mary's River at the Georgia-Florida Line heading into the Atlantic. Fort Clinch was on our right and a whale on our left. Yes, a whale was splashing off in the distance. Maybe a Right Whale. Jim and I took turns at the helm while the other one napped. I saw a hammerhead shark. This was my first shark sighting. Cruising through the night it was calm. Ship traffic increased near Savannah in the Shipping Channel. The ships are ginormous and we made sure to make our course corrections to keep our distance from them. The next morning was gorgeous with a beautiful sunrise and dolphins swimming off the bow. We approached the Charleston Sea Buoy and tucked in behind a tug and barge. We stay to the right of the channel to allow plenty of room for an incoming government vessel. The inlet was very busy with vessel traffic. We stayed at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina. They provided shuttle service into downtown Charleston. The next morning we cruised by the Patriots Point to see the USS Yorktown. Then offshore heading to Georgetown SC. The Great Loop is a 6,000-mile adventure that takes boaters around the eastern part of the U.S. & Canada. Loopers cruise aboard their own boats, often taking about a year, to complete the route.
