Chris and Jake are behind the camera today!! Let's have a look inside look (literally!) of the clear tank furnace and share more info about some of the behind the scenes in a glass studio. In this video, Chris begins by introducing the furnace, a crucible-style design inspired by Italian techniques. This furnace uses a large crucible to hold molten glass, which is known for being highly corrosive. He explains that their crucibles are made of 99% alumina, a high-temperature refractory material, but even this material cannot fully withstand the effects of molten glass at 2,000°F over time. Overuse leads to thinning and eventual cracking of the crucible, causing glass to flow into the tank’s bottom. Chris introduces the recuperator, a custom-built component designed by John Childs, a renowned furnace designer. This device captures heat exiting the furnace and uses it to preheat air before it mixes with gas in the burner. This innovation reduces energy consumption, which is critical for an art form as energy-intensive as glassblowing. Chris emphasizes their commitment to environmental consciousness and energy efficiency, noting the importance of minimizing waste while managing the high costs of maintaining 24/7 furnace operation.
