This update of AidanEyewitness is a ‘comparative cities’ presentation, looking at Antwerp and my home cities of Manchester and Liverpool. We look at some striking examples of architecture in all three cities, including Antwerp's amazing Museum aan de Stroom - the ‘Museum by the River’ or MAS, as well as the world famous Haven Huis or Harbour House designed by award-winning Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid (1950 - 2016) 0:00 Introduction from AidanEyewitness 0:55 Museum aan de Stroom Panorama 1:50 Antwerp Port, Port of Liverpool, Port of Manchester 2:30 The Flemish Weavers move to Manchester 2:40 Antwerpen Centraal railway station 3:09 Manchester Piccadilly station and Picc Vicc line 3:23 Liverpool Lime Street and underground Loop Line 3:26 Trams in Antwerp, Manchester and Liverpool 4:15 The Haven Huis - Antwerp Port House by Zaha Hadid 5:05 Rejected Fourth Grace project 5:16 Cities Quiz Antwerp Manchester Liverpool 6:02 Antwerp Grote Markt - Market Place with a surprise 6:38 South district Zuiderzicht & Scheldezicht transplanted 7:37 Anwerp Palace of Justice with funny pointed roofs 7:54 What can Antwerp learn from Liverpool and Manchester? 8:28 Picc Vicc failure Ordsall Chord, HS2 cancelled 9:10 Mayors and regions 9:52 May the 9th Europe Day 10:22 Tot ziens in Antwerpen! Using my Adobe Photoshop skills, I have transplanted the Harbour House into Liverpool’s Albert Dock, the Zuiderzicht (South View) apartment tower into Manchester and Scheldezicht (Schelde view) apartment tower into Liverpool. My goal here is to compare architecture in the different cities and to ask certain questions: Would a building like the Harbour House get planning permission in Manchester or Liverpool? Is Antwerp more daring in its commissioning of modern architecture than we are? How does Antwerp's modern architecture compare to modern architecture in Liverpool and Manchester We look at Urbis, Manchester and the proposed building for the ‘Fourth Grace’ project in Liverpool, with visits fo Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street stations for the purposes of comparison. I was very impressed with the tram system in Antwerp, we compare with Manchester’s highly successful Metrolink system and Liverpool’s abandoned Merseytram proposal. In the final part of the video we look at how transport projects in Manchester and Liverpool were cancelled due to cost and other reasons, most famously the high speed rail line to Manchester (HS2). Inspired by Peter Hook’s book about the Hacienda, ‘How Not To Run A Club’, I come up with an idea - and cover design - for a book ‘How Not To Do A Megaproject’. Antwerp completed its below-ground expansion of Centraal station in 2007, which is on the Amsterdam to Paris and (from 2025) to London high speed rail line. How ironic that there will be a high speed train connection between Antwerp and London but not between London and Manchester. I have tried to take a dry, serious subject and add some humour explaining it in an accessible way to a wide audience, providing key information. I visited Antwerp on the 25th and the 26th of April 2024. I flew from Manchester to Charleroi and back via Ryanair and took the train between Charleroi and Brussels, stopping off in Brussels for an hour on the outward leg. The ‘comparative cities’ concept was one of my original ideas when I set up the channel during lockdown. I like the idea of bringing cities across Europe and further afield together. I want to create a sense of 'dépaysement' - disorientation - where you are not sure which city you are in and you start to see your home city in a new way. I was inspired by the 'European Cinemas' trailer - Manchester is at 12 secs, Liverpool at 90 seconds • EUROPA CINEMAS - trailer I intend to pursue this theme further in future videos. Please let me know what you think.
