The testing of biological materials as well as bacteriological, viral, and cell cultures is made easier with well plates. They contain many plastic-formed wells that are used as miniature test tubes. This is excellent for downsizing test space and for performing many tests at once. In this case study, the Mach-1 mechanical tester was used to determine the stiffness and indentation modulus of small samples of agarose gels in a 96-well plate. Multiple concentrations were tested from 0.8% to 1.2% and with volumes of these gels varying from 0.1 mL to 0.5 mL. The samples were made from 6 mm biopsy punched disks instead of pouring the Agar solution directly into the wells in order to ensure a flat surface for indentation testing. The high accuracy of the mechanical tester was needed to obtain precise data on the mechanical properties of these samples with thicknesses smaller than 4 mm. The Mach-1 is a flexible system adapted for highly sensitive and precise testing of many types of samples (biomaterials, microspheres, pills, living tissues, etc.). The Scan function of its software, Mach-1 Motion, allows the automation of the indentation test in multiple wells consecutively.
