This video shows a short race at Texas during the 2003 Cup Series season. It is the first part of a video series that compares the original tire model with TMV3 and TMV3 + DR. In this series, each video will showcase how the different tire models affect car handling, tire wear, and overall race behavior. Additional videos featuring the TMV3 and TMV3 + DR comparisons will be released in the coming episodes. Physics - NR2003 Original Tire Model Series - 2003 Cup Series Track - Texas Motor Speedway Quick note after doing extensive testing with TMV3. The original tire model provides a very high level of grip and often makes the car feel like it is “on rails,” especially when exiting corners. Most of the grip loss seems to occur on corner entry, which has always felt unusual to me. From my experience driving the ARCA and Gen4 Cup cars in the iRacing (particularly before the ARCA and Gen4 car was changed from the 2008 Nationwide car), the behavior was different. In those cars, entering a corner too fast usually causes the car to become tight rather than immediately spinning. With the original tire model however, going into the corner too fast can often result in a spin instead of the gradual loss of front grip you would normally expect. TMV3 changes this behavior by making the car more likely to get loose on corner exit rather than on corner entry, which creates a driving feel that is different from the original tire model and hopefully more like an iRacing experience.
