This ground report from Jiradei village in Siwan district, Bihar exposes the harsh reality of a Primary Health Centre (PHC). On paper, the walls of the PHC shine with posters of Ayushman Bharat, Chief Minister’s Digital Health Scheme, and other government programs, but in reality, the facilities remain locked. The OPD, medicine distribution counter, and even the toilets were found shut with locks and ropes. According to the duty chart, doctors are supposed to be present from 8 AM to 2 PM, yet at 10:30 AM no doctor was available. Villagers revealed that doctors often come late or leave early, forcing patients to travel 5 km to the nearest government hospital or rely on private clinics. The centre itself was in a dilapidated state – dirty toilets, spider webs, unused rooms filled with garbage – all under the big posters of political leaders promising healthcare for all. Ironically, this village is also the birthplace of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President, which makes the situation even more shameful.
