In this episode of our Alumni Conversations series, Professor Atif Mian talks to his former student Emil Verner (Ph.D. 2018). Verner is now the Class of 1957 Career Development Professor and an Assistant Professor of Finance at MIT’s Sloan School of Business. Verner and Mian discuss: What inspired Verner's interest in macrofinance and the study of financial crises, and his good fortune to arrive at Princeton the same year as Professor Mian. Verner's process for completing his dissertation, which was ultimately published as the lead article in the American Economic Review. How Verner's life has changed since transitioning from student to teacher, and how Princeton prepared him to stand in front of a classroom. Verner's lifelong passion for history, and how it has informed some of his most recent research on historical periods of high inflation.
