#linguistics #language #languages This is the second episode of Ergativity & Friends, a many-part series in which we'll explore a wide variety of grammatical phenomena through the lens of something called alignment. In this video, we focus on alignment in relation to case marking. We first discuss languages that exhibit accusative alignment with respect to case marking, using data from English, Turkish, Korean, and Harar Oromo for exemplification. We then discuss languages with ergative case marking, like Hunzib, Dyirbal, and Tongan. Finally, we examine a language where case marking follows a neutral pattern: Mandarin.
