The backside boardslide is usually the first boardslide snowboarders will learn. Once you’re comfortable with 50-50s (a straight slide over a box), the backside boardslide is a great next trick to learn. With our first backside boardslides, we’ll start in a 50-50 and then pivot our board sideways into a boardslide. Once we’re comfortable with that move we can start jumping directly into a boardslide. Step 1: On flat ground try sliding the snowboard underneath your body. Do your best to keep your upper body still and use your legs to pivot the board underneath you. You should feel the twist in your core as your hips move with your legs to approach 90 degrees separation from your shoulders. Step 2: Next, we’ll do this same movement while sliding on snow. Drop in straight like you’re going to ride right over a box, and then use your legs to turn the snowboard underneath you. Focus on keeping a very light heelside edge in the snow. We don’t want our toe edge to catch in the snow, but we also don’t want to slip out over our heels when we get on a box. Step 3: In the park, warm up with a couple of 50-50s and make sure you’re comfortable with your speed and the way the box is sliding. You want to feel totally balanced on the box with equal weight on both feet and with a totally flat board. When you’re ready, approach the box just like you do for your 50-50. On the box, look ahead and keep your lead shoulder pointed at the end of the box while sliding the board sideways underneath your upper body. Unlike the on-snow warm-up you can’t use your heelside edge here. Keep the board flat and pull your legs underneath your upper body to start bringing the board sideways. Step 4: As you get comfortable with pivoting on the box, you can add a hop at takeoff to land on the box in a boardslide. The key is landing with a totally flat board and weight equally balanced between both feet. You can also practice this outside of the park before bringing it to a box. Once you have the backside boardslide mastered on a box, you’re ready to take it to other features! Just like with the box, it is helpful to get 50-50s dialed on any box or rail before trying a boardslide on it! #snowboardlesson #snowboarding #snowboard #boardslide #tricktip #improve #snow #tricktip
