In September 1911, a quiet house at 63 Tollington Park in Islington, North London became the centre of one of Britain’s most disturbing Victorian true crime cases. This documentary examines the murder of Eliza Mary Barrow, a financially independent woman whose trust was systematically exploited by her landlord, Frederick Henry Seddon. What began as a respectable lodging arrangement slowly turned into a calculated scheme of greed, deception, and poison. Through careful research and period-accurate storytelling, this film traces how Seddon gained control of Barrow’s assets, including her India Stock and Camden Town properties, before her sudden illness and death on 14 September 1911. Initially certified as natural causes, her burial was rushed and suspiciously discreet. Only later did a police investigation, exhumation, and forensic analysis reveal the presence of arsenic, exposing a deliberate 19th-century historical murder case that shocked Edwardian London. Covering the investigation, the Old Bailey trial of 1912, and Seddon’s execution at Pentonville Prison, this documentary explores themes of trust, social respectability, and the darker side of Victorian domestic life. Ideal for viewers interested in historical true crime, legal history, and forgotten British murder cases.
