as performed by the Hradec Králové Philharmonic and conductor Paul Mauffray Nov. 26, 2014 This is the complete original version of the 1st movement from 1889 without the traditional cut which Janáček later added in 1928. This was the first composition that Leoš Janáček wrote for full orchestra and uses music he heard in his native town of Hukvaldy. The opening melody of this movement is based on a Lachian folk song which begins with this text "Zabil jest Matóšek, zabil Majdalenku, že ji nesměl vzíti za svoji manželku". This is followed by two other dances: the moderately paced "šátečkový" or "scarf dance" in 3/4 (with the melody in the violas) which alternates with the fast "Kyjový" or "club dance" in 2/4. Listen for the few bars played by English Horn and later also Bass Clarinet which add unique color to the orchestral texture. _ Paul Mauffray began studying conducting with Sergiu Celibidache and has frequently conducted Janáček operas as assistant to Sir Charles Mackerras, Kirill Petrenko, Jiří Bělohlávek, Bohumil Gregor, Leon Botstein, and Sir John Eliot Gardiner. He has also conducted Janáček and Dvořák operas at the invitation of Valery Gergiev at the Mariinsky Theatre. www.paulmauffray.com #leosjanacek #janacek
