The Norwegian frigate KNM Roald Amundsen (HNoMS Roald Amundsen) completed a major eight-month global deployment in early December, successfully returning to Norway 7th of December 2025. The Deployment (April – December 2025) The KNM Roald Amundsen departed from its home base, Haakonsvern Naval Station in Bergen, on April 22, 2025, for its mission, designated Operation Highmast. Role and Mission: The frigate was fully integrated into the UK Carrier Strike Group (CSG25), centered around the flagship HMS Prince of Wales. This was an eight-month long-distance deployment to demonstrate Norway's commitment to global security and strengthen cooperation with key allies. Route and Training: The deployment involved sailing through the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and into the Western Pacific Rim. The frigate conducted significant exercises and port visits with various allied and partner nations, including: NATO forces (participating in Exercise Neptune Strike). Partners in the Indo-Pacific, such as Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, and New Zealand. The frigate hosted a British Royal Navy Wildcat helicopter and crew for the entire mission, a major step in Anglo-Norwegian cooperation. Success: The mission was declared a "huge success" by Norwegian and British defense leaders. The deployment demonstrated the frigate's ability to operate fully integrated with a complex carrier strike group in high-end maritime warfare scenarios. The Return to Norway The KNM Roald Amundsen returned to the naval base at Haakonsvern, Bergen, in early December 2025. The frigate had earlier sailed into Portsmouth, UK, with the HMS Prince of Wales on December 3rd. It arrived back in Bergen on Sunday December 7th, where the crew was greeted by their families and friends. The crew received a medal ceremony for completing their operational deployment abroad.
