In 1990 we took samples from a very large placer that had been previously worked for values during 1880s rush: 2 foot level across 1.8 miles--0.021/0.035/0.028/0.008/0.030/0.043/0.038/0.047/0.042/0.053 5 foot level across .3 miles--0.323/0.216/0.464/0.082 All values shown are in Troy ounces per standard ton. The placer is impossibly rich--by "impossibly" I mean we had to re-assay many samples, and even got several values much higher than samples shown here. Previous miners had built a smelter on site, and that area is polluted with mercury--actually right across the bed of a stream that originates from the low point of this large valley. A new mining operation would be capable of removing the nearly all of the mercury from the soils; environmental remediation could provide an appropriate justification for mining at this location.
