The origin of education itself in Western tradition was the study of the Iliad and the Odyssey, first by the Greeks, then by the Romans. All over the ancient Mediterranean, children were taught to memorize and recite from memory long passages of the epics. Their teachers thought this imbued in them morals of honor, sacrifice, and bravery, and bound the disparate city-states of Greece by a common heritage, first through oral tradition, and later with the birth of literature; thereupon, the Roman's adoption of Homer's mythos and Greek literature legitimized their claim as an extension of Hellenic culture. Almost nothing in Classical texts can be appreciated without some knowledge of Homer's works; thus, it behooves us as well, who read and speak Latin and Greek, to incorporate an intimate familiarity with the Iliad and the Odyssey into our psyches, in order to approach the set of knowledge that all Greco-Roman authors took for granted. But how do we do that, when these works are so long, and so difficult in the original? They intimidate the most stalwart among us. In this talk, delivered in Latin, a novel method for learning parts of the Homeric epics by heart will be demonstrated and taught as a critical first step in beginning one's study of Homer; after the talk audience members will be able to pratice this method on their own, and teachers may pass on to their students, not only when studying the Iliad and the Odyssey, but applied to the Aeneid, and indeed all poetry. Thus we may further develop our collective understanding of Greek and Latin literature in ways deeper than we had previously immagined.
