During its existence, the Soviet Union was one of the world's superpowers, and was one of the two main contenders of the free world during the Cold War. The 15 republics that made up the Soviet Union were divided into three groups: the Soviet national republics, the autonomous republics, and the autonomous regions. The Soviet national republics were considered the main political units and had more autonomy than the others. Among them, Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus were the most important economically and demographically. The Soviet Union faced several economic and political problems during its existence, including lack of political freedom, economic inequality, and a culture of fear and repression.
