These valves open and close in response to pressure changes, regulating blood flow through the heart's chambers and into the major arteries. 🔹 The Two Major Types of Heart Valves There are two main types of heart valves, each with a specific function and anatomical location: ✅ Atrioventricular (AV) valves – Found between the atria and ventricles, these include: Tricuspid valve – Located between the right atrium and right ventricle Bicuspid (mitral) valve – Located between the left atrium and left ventricle ✅ Semilunar valves – Found between the ventricles and major arteries, these include: Pulmonary valve – Between the right ventricle and pulmonary trunk Aortic valve – Between the left ventricle and aorta 🔹 Heart Valve Anatomy & Components Each heart valve consists of specialized structures that allow it to function effectively: ✅ Cusps (leaflets) – Thin flaps that open and close to regulate blood flow ✅ Chordae tendineae – Tough, fibrous strings that anchor AV valve cusps to the heart muscle ✅ Papillary muscles – Small muscles inside the ventricles that prevent valve prolapse by holding the chordae tendineae in place The AV valves (tricuspid and mitral) are reinforced by chordae tendineae and papillary muscles, ensuring that the valves close properly and prevent blood from flowing backward into the atria. 🔹 How Do Heart Valves Work? ✅ Atrioventricular (AV) Valves: Open when blood fills the atria, allowing it to flow into the ventricles Close when the ventricles contract, preventing backflow into the atria Chordae tendineae and papillary muscles anchor the cusps, ensuring they don't invert under pressure ✅ Semilunar Valves (Pulmonary & Aortic): Open when the ventricles contract, allowing blood to be ejected into the pulmonary trunk and aorta Close when ventricular pressure decreases, preventing backflow into the heart These valves lack chordae tendineae but have three cusps that resemble a half-moon shape 🔹 Why Understanding Heart Valves Matters Knowing how heart valves function is essential for medical students, nursing students, and healthcare professionals. Valve abnormalities like mitral regurgitation, aortic stenosis, or valve prolapse can lead to serious cardiovascular issues, making their anatomy and physiology critical to understand. ► THE PROF 📚🏫 Jasmine Clark is a Senior Clinical Instructor in Nursing in Atlanta, GA. She truly enjoys providing the foundational knowledge upon which students will rely when practicing as a nurse. She will prepare nursing students in a professional, resolute and effective manner for their physiology final exam or the NCLEX exam while guiding them through the different fields of physiology in nursing, including tumor formation, nervous tissue damage and disorders as well as the cardiovascular system. ► RELATED VIDEOS 📽️ If you liked this video and need some more information about the subject, you’ll probably want to check the following videos out:    • Why Does Congestive Heart Failure Cause Pu...      • Cardiac Assessment for Nurses | How and Wh...   ► INSTALL the free Lecturio app iTunes Store: https://app.adjust.com/z21zrf Play Store: https://app.adjust.com/b01fak ► LET’S CONNECT: Facebook: www.facebook.com/lecturio.nursing Instagram: www.instagram.com/lecturio_nursing TikTok:   / uc284za0sekv8wgzjo4gltfg   LinkedIn:   / lecturio-medical   🧠 Learn more about Lecturio Nursing 🩺 https://www.lecturio.com/nursing/ Disclaimer: Lecturio offers educational content for healthcare students to prepare for exams and/or to review knowledge gained at a Medical School.
