Slieve Gallion Brae is a beautiful mountain named after an Irish giant called Callan. It is located in south Derry. Like many old Irish songs, no one is sure who wrote it and the melody may have originally had words in Irish. The first known printed version of this song goes back to 1908. The words speak of exile from a homeland because of rents that are too high. In this area it is known that 200 or so people were evicted around 1880 as they were unable to pay their rent. The Sperrins is a beautiful part of the world and many enjoyable hours were had driving around this mountain. I added a little outro to the song: “Tá cumha orm i ndiaith Slieve gCallan Brae” I am longing for Slieve Gallion Brae Hope you enjoy - Finn #irishsong #folksong #irishfolk #folkmusic #slievegallionbrae #finnmcginn
