By 1997, the once-busy sidings at Glazebrook near Warrington had been reduced to just two operational tracks serving the local oil terminal. Nationally, movement by rail of oil products had reached its peak in 1972, when more than 26 million tonnes were transported by rail. Most trains at this particular terminal ran from Haverton Hill, though services also arrived from Stanlow, Lindsey, and Port Clarence. The final delivery to the terminal took place in September 1999. Captured here on a wet and gloomy April morning, locomotive 56055 is seen collecting its train before running round to head back eastbound with a rake of empty 100-tonne tanks.
