Autumn Sketch - William Gillock

#med (Music.Every.Day) Day 187 of my daily video posting project. I have been working on this project since November 2023--posting a video of piano music every single day! This piece is "Autumn Sketch" by William Gillock. It is from his collection called "Lyric Preludes in Romantic Style". (This makes me think of J.S. Bach's experiment on the 24 Preludes and Fugues in all Major and Minor keys). I think it is an amazing project to undertake--to write 24 interesting and different pieces using the key signature as inspiration!! I like Autumn Sketch--this is number 12 in the collection and is written in B minor. Many of the other pieces in this collection show up in the Royal Conservatory of Music as studies or as modern repertoire choices on the exam syllabus--ranging from Level 4 to Level 7. This one makes me think of the classic Autumn Leaves--it uses some of the same chord progressions. William Gillock was an American composer. I had heard that for the Royal Conservatory, you can ask to play one of your own repertoire choices, and this composer kept popping up. Someone on the board got wise and looked through his collection of music and started including more of his pieces on the syllabus! His pieces are dreamy and always have interesting harmonies.
