Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR, IUGR) | Types, Causes, TORCH Infections, Diagnosis, Treatment Fetal Growth Restriction (also known as intrauterine growth restriction) is a condition involving abnormally small fetal growth (defined as less than 10th percentile for gestational age or less than 2500g at full term), which is caused by an underlying insult to the developing fetus. There are many causes of fetal growth restriction, including maternal malnutrition and substance abuse, placental insufficiency, and TORCH infections. In this lesson, we discuss these causes in more detail, including the two types of fetal growth restriction (symmetric and asymmetric), along with how it is diagnosed and how it is treated.
