Check out the event summary for this session here: https://www.thedialogue.org/analysis/... On December 1, Andrés Manuel López Obrador will take office after a landslide victory in the July presidential election. AMLO has received significant attention for his denunciation of corruption within the government, army, and police forces in Mexico. He has also spoken out against the increase in violent conflict related to gangs and organized criminal groups across the country. AMLO has made many promises to improve Mexico’s security situation by fighting graft, reversing the militarization of public security, pursuing transitional justice, and establishing truth commissions. What can we expect from AMLO’s security policies? Will the new administration be able to reform Mexico’s security forces? How can security concerns be most effectively addressed at both the national and regional level? The Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to partner with the International Crisis Group for this discussion which will be based on their new report: “Building Peace in Mexico: Dilemmas Facing the López Obrador Government.” This report reviews the current state of violence and conflict in Mexico, identifies obstacles to security reform, and examines AMLO’s policy proposals.
