"The Trials of Alger Hiss": full-length documentary film by John Lowenthal, first released 1979. Live interviews with participants in the famous Hiss case and original newsreel footage tell the story of one of the most sensational and important criminal trials in U.S. history. Alger Hiss served in the State Department and was Secretary General of the Dumbarton Oaks Conference that led to the United Nations Charter. Accused in 1948 by Whittaker Chambers of being a secret communist spy, Hiss vehemently protested his innocence before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) and then in two federal trials -- the first ending in a hung jury, but the second convicting him of perjury and sending him to federal prison. He was released in 1954 after 44 months in jail. He spent the rest of his life trying to clear his name. The Hiss case launched Richard Nixon on his path to the White House and ushered in the McCarthy Era and the Cold War. Alger Hiss died in 1996 at the age of 92.
