Enter The Room Podcast and our Host Saundra Nicholson are excited to have as our special guest, Playwright David Lee Lindsey, for our Instagram Live Broadcast. David was born in Jackson, Mississippi, at Jackson State Univeristy. His mother was from Jackson, the big city, and his father was from the Mississippi Delta area, the son of a sharecropper. David was one of 6 brothers, he being the fourth. The youngest was born in Compton, California, when their family had moved out west. As he described, "This was before Compton went into decline, when it was a highly functional and relatively prosperous city at one time." David went on to Cal State Long Beach, where he received BA in 1981 in Radio-TV. As he explained, "I majored in Radio-TV because I wanted to be a TV sitcom writer. After trying many, many times, I got no opportunities. Needing a way to make a decent income, a few years later I attended a 3-month program sponsored by IBM at the Los Angeles Urban League where they taught computer programming to minority kids; usually a 4 year degree was required." David had become a computer programmer, according to him. He wasn’t the “starving artist” type." He heard stories from his parents what it was like to be hungry, and being a starving artist wasn’t for him. He worked forty plus years as a computer programmer, network administrator, Lotus Notes " While David wasn't physically writing plays in the 80’s, he spent a lot of time thinking about writing." In Summer, 1990, in the LA Times, I saw where the Center Theater Group, Mark Taper Forum, was accepting plays from writers for consideration in a new playwright group that they were starting. I sent “Haints, Conjurmen, and Leaving” and got accepted. It was a prestigious group of writers. David recently received critical acclaim for his play "160 Years of Walking." at the Stella Adler.
