It is clinically important as it stabilizes the knee joint during movements of extension, flexion, and slight bending. 👉 Saphenous Opening of Thigh This is an oval opening in the fascia latae. It is about 2.5 cm long and 2 cm broad with its long axis directed downwards and laterally. The arteries and veins that we discussed earlier, pass through the saphenous opening. The saphenous nerve, a branch of the femoral nerve, also passes through the saphenous opening. 👉 Intermuscular Septa of Thigh Lastly, we have the intermuscular septa. It is important to know about this extension of the deep fascia of the thigh as it is the very reason that the thigh is divided into compartments. Three intermuscular septa divide the thigh into three compartments. The lateral intermuscular septum is the thickest of these septa. It separates the anterior compartment of the thigh from the posterior compartment. The medial intermuscular septum is attached to the medial lip of the linea aspera and separates the anterior compartment of the thigh from the medial compartment. The posterior intermuscular septum is poorly defined. It separates the medial compartment of the thigh from the posterior compartment.
