Who Am I is a reflective and imaginative exploration of identity through the power of storytelling. Moving through vivid moments from childhood to adulthood, this talk reveals how we unconsciously frame our lives through different genres such as Westerns, superhero myths, science fiction, horror and romance, each one helping us make sense of who we are and what we are experiencing. Drawing on insights from Jonathan Haidt and the idea that the brain is a story processor rather than a logic processor, the talk examines how the narratives we create shape our understanding of fear, freedom, loss, ambition and change. From early memories in Ireland and London to a career with the Royal Shakespeare Company, personal experiences are reframed as evolving chapters in a larger memoir. At its heart, this is an invitation to reflect on the stories we tell about ourselves. Are they empowering us or holding us back? If identity is built through narrative, then we have agency in how those stories are told. Inspired by Walt Whitman and his line “I am large, I contain multitudes”, this talk reminds us that we are never just one story. We are many, and we can choose how they shape us. Donnacadh is an Olivier Award winning Creative Director, Experience Designer and Story Architect specialising in live theatre, immersive experiences and experiential learning. His wide ranging career has seen him working on everything from musicals, West End Comedies as well as other forms of immersive Location Based Entertainment (LBE) for anyone and everyone to enjoy. In between many of his creative endeavours, he has taught and mentored several students from universities and drama schools such as RADA, LAMDA, SAID Business Schools and Cambridge University. Now he will speak at Loughborough University about the ways narratives can help us to understand ourselves on a deeper level as we ask ourselves which stories have helped us get to where we are, who do we see ourselves as in these stories and what’s changed over time. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
