Quire of Cheahs presents Josef Rheinberger's ravishing "Abendlied", the third piece from his Drei Geistliche Gesänge, Op. 69. This poignant motet sets a verse from the biblical narration of the appearance of Christ to the disciples on the road to Emmaus from Luke 24:29 using the German text from Martin Luther's bible. Rheinberger had written a first version on March 9, 1855, a month before Easter and two weeks before his 16th birthday! Eight years later, he revised the motet and it was finally published in 1873. This work is regarded as one of his best-known sacred composition alongside his Cantus missæ, his only mass written for double choir.
