I Built a Hydraulic Front Loader From a Lawn Tractor I bought an old John Deere LX188 lawn tractor with a 17HP Kawasaki V-Twin liquid-cooled engine. The mower deck was completely destroyed, but the engine and transmission were still in great condition — so instead of scrapping it, I decided to transform it into something useful. I built a fully functional hydraulic front loader from scratch, including the entire hydraulic system, cylinders, and control valves. To handle the extra weight and forces, I reinforced the frame, front axle, wheel hubs, and added bearing supports for the rear transmission shafts. Despite being just a lawn tractor — with no front-wheel drive — it can lift wet gravel, level ground, and help with real construction work around my property. This project turned a simple mower into a powerful machine that’s both useful and fun to drive!
