Shortly after Mason McKay got his driver’s license, his car was struck by another vehicle, and Mason sustained a traumatic brain injury. After a stay at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Mason was referred to Bethany Children’s. His parents, Morty and Shana went from being in shock and numb with disbelief, to feeling that they could breathe easier when they walked through the doors at Bethany Children’s. “This is the place God intended Mason to be. The staff, the facilities – you can feel it,” Morty shares. “Every moment that you’re here there’s truly hope.” Mason was initially in an unresponsive wakeful state - out of his coma but not consistently showing that he was processing his surroundings. His team at Bethany Children’s started therapies to help push him toward emergence. Thanks to what Shana describes as seamless collaboration between care teams and intensive therapies, Mason’s feeding tube and tracheostomy tube were able to be removed fairly quickly. Four months after he was admitted, Mason walked out of Bethany Children’s with his family. Throughout his journey, Morty and Shana were grateful for each tiny milestone and their faith in God’s plan constantly renewed their positive energy. Morty says, “God built Mason to fight this battle, and he’s going to be okay. We’re seeing that play out. He’s a walking miracle.” Watch the video to see more of Mason’s incredible journey and the positive impact he and his family had on everyone here at Bethany Children’s. https://www.bethanychildrens.org
