Marilyn Stowe of Stowe Family Law discusses mediation on Sky News

Marilyn Stowe, the senior partner at Stowe Family Law, appeared on Sky News this morning to discuss the momentous changes to family law in England and Wales, ranging from mediation to the setup of the family courts, which have come into force today. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act has signaled an unprecedented number of changes set to shake up family law. The new changes include: Single Family Court A single Family Court has come into existence, under section 31A of the Matrimonial and Family Proceeding Act 1984, as amended by the Crime and Courts Act 2013. From now on, only a small number of matters will be reserved for the High Court. These include: *cases already being heard in the High Court *cases where there is an order directing that the proceedings should be heard in the High Court *or where there is a rule, enactment or Practice Direction that states the proceedings should be started in the High Court. On Sky News, Marilyn Stowe also discussed the new requirement for couples considering divorce to have a MIAM: a mediation information and assessment meeting. This is a meeting to ascertain if a couple's case is suitable for mediation. It is now a mandatory requirement. Watch the video to learn more.
