This Off-Grid & Overland Year Changed Everything | Our 2025 Story

As 2025 comes to a close, we wanted to take a moment to look back on a year that challenged us, shaped us, and gave us memories we’ll carry for a lifetime. This video begins at the lake, waiting for the ice to freeze — and quickly turns into one adventure after another. The boys get stranded on the mainland, Peter falls through the ice and safely recovers himself using ice picks, and we end up buying a fan boat just so we can cross the Narrows. Winter at the lake turns out to be one for the books. Pete begins his journey around the world. Lando starts to get sick, visits the vet, recovers, and later joins us for a night spent in the truck during a massive snowstorm. When spring finally arrives, the ice melts — only for us to discover the barge has sunk. We recover it and keep moving forward. Dan injures his leg in a motorcycle accident and recovers back at the island while Carol and I head all the way to Flagstaff for Overland Expo. Along the way, Peter undergoes nasal surgery that dramatically improves his long-standing sinus issues. From there, we drive across the country to Baltimore to ship the truck to Europe. We reunite with the truck overseas and share a picture-driven look at our European adventure before returning to the island for Thanksgiving — where Caroline and Matt surprise us with the news that we’re going to be grandparents. As we close up the cabin and head back to Europe, we receive the heartbreaking news of losing our beloved dog, Lando. A painful ending to a remarkable year.
