Over the past several years we've made several videos showing breakfast or iftar at the different mosques in our area. This time we're showing the break fast or in Malay, "suasana berbuka puasa" at Masjid An-Noor (Bridgeport Islamic Society), about 20 miles from where we live. Muslims around the world break their fast during Ramadhan at different mosques differently. For our audiences in Malaysia, Indonesia and other part of the world, who don't have a chance to experience iftar here, this video could be an educational or "eye opener" material for you. And for our non-Muslim friends who wanted to know, we hope you can gain some insight into our iftar. And all mosques that we know of, would always welcome our non-Muslim friends who would like to join us for this amazing iftar experience. And for our moslem friends in and around our area, if you've never been to Masjid An-Noor, perhaps this would encourage you to visit the different mosques and get to know our muslim brothers and sisters in their respected community. There's plenty of parking spaces there too. At this masjid, after the adhan, attendees would be served with a slightly heavier course of appetizers (dates, bread, soup, fruits, drinks, juices etc., for about 10-15 minutes, then they would proceed with maghrib prayer. The main course will be served afterwards, on the weekends there would usually be special meal such as lambs. There's a short period of rest after meal before Isya' prayer followed by solat tarawikh. In the last 10 days of ramadan, the tarawikh will be led by our young Hafiz, the son of Abideen or MatJep (who is originally from Kluang, Johor). In the past we've shown you videos of iftar at Masjid Al Islam in New Haven, the old Masjid West Haven near University of New Haven, and the new masjid in Orange (NHICCT), Connecticut. In the future, we may show you iftar at other mosques in the area, insyaAllah. So What is Iftar? Iftar (or Fatoor) (Arabic: إفطار ʾifṭār 'breakfast') is the evening meal when Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset. Muslims break their fast at the time of the call to prayer for the evening prayer. Iftar is one of the religious observances of Ramadan and is often done as a community, with people gathering to break their fast together. Iftar is taken right after Maghrib time, which is around sunset. Traditionally but not mandatory, three dates are eaten to break the fast in emulation of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad, who broke his fast in this manner. Many Muslims believe that feeding someone iftar as a form of charity is very rewarding and that such was practised by the Prophet Muhammad. AH Qasmi provides this information for breaking the fast to say this prayer at the time of Iftar: “ O Allah! it is for thee that I observe fast and it is with Thine blessing that I break it. ”
