So today, we’re having our very first three-way. And by that I mean, we’re reviewing three of these hot yoga mats at the same time. We sent Matt to his favorite hot yoga studio to floor-test each one and find out what all the hype is about. Instructor: “Good afternoon, everyone, welcome to hot yoga! My name is X and I’ll be leading today’s session. For those of you who are new to hot yoga, let me give you a quick rundown. Hot yoga is just like regular yoga, only hotter. We pump the AC up to a comfortable 105 degrees with the humidity set to 40% and sweat out all the toxins and impurities that we’ve been collecting. Think of it like a sauna with stretching. Instructor: “So, if everyone can unroll their mats we can get started!” Gary VO: When it comes to choosing a hot yoga mat, there are a few things to look out for. Thickness – Too thin and you run the risk of hurting your knees on certain poses. Too thick and you may have issues feeling or sensing the floor. Stickiness – The surface provide good traction or you’ll slip and slide all over the matt. Material – the material of your yoga mat will affect all the other properties such as texture, stickiness, eco-friendliness, and sponginess! Our first mat, the YR Cork Yoga Mat, is made out of non-slip rubber on the base and cork on the yoga surface. Our final mat comes from active wear giant lululemon. Normally they specialize in leggings and clothes for people that want to look like they regularly work out, but to our surprise, they’ve actually released a piece of fitness equipment, not just fashion. With a bottom layer of non-slip rubber and an absorbent top layer of polyurethane, this mat provides sweat-wicking and prevents mildew or mold from growing.
