Hankley Common was the final heathland stop on my trip across England and Wales. I came in knowing very little about the course beyond its strong reputation in trusted rankings and its convenient spot on my route. What I found was one of the most enjoyable surprises of the entire journey. From the moment you drive through the gates, Hankley feels pristine. The property has a vastness to it, the holes meandering gracefully across gently undulating ground. It’s the kind of landscape that pulls you in immediately. Originally designed by James Braid and later refined by Harry Colt, the course carries the pedigree of two of golf’s great architects—and it absolutely lives up to that reputation. Elevated greens, well-positioned bunkers, and clever use of the rolling terrain make for a strategic and demanding test. The heather frames holes beautifully but punishes any careless play, ensuring you’re always plotting your way forward. The conditioning was exceptional when I played it—the fairways immaculate and the greens nearly flawless. Even the clubhouse reflects that balance of tradition and refinement, offering a calm, modern touch before you head out. What struck me most about Hankley was how it combined challenge with serenity. It never felt overbearing, but it asked enough from every part of my game to stay compelling from start to finish. One of my favorite holes came at the close: the bunkerless 18th. It’s protected instead by a deep gulley fronting the green. To find the surface, your approach needs to be high and precise—miss long, and you’re left scrambling to save par. It’s a clever and fitting conclusion to a thoughtful round.
