To change a metal stem (clamp-in) TPMS sensor, you must remove the tire from the wheel. This procedure requires tire changing and balancing equipment. First, loosen the lug nuts slightly while the vehicle is on the ground. Raise the vehicle safely and remove the wheel. Remove the valve cap and valve core to completely deflate the tire. Make sure all air is released before breaking the bead. Using a tire machine, break the bead on both sides of the tire. Be careful to position the wheel so the bead breaker does not press directly on the TPMS sensor. Dismount the top bead of the tire. Rotate the tire so the sensor is opposite the mounting head to prevent damage. Lift the tire enough to access the sensor inside the wheel. From the outside of the wheel, remove the valve cap and the retaining nut on the metal stem. Push the sensor inward and remove it from inside the wheel. Install the new TPMS sensor by placing a new sealing grommet on the valve stem. Insert the sensor through the valve hole from inside the wheel, making sure the sensor body sits flat against the rim. From the outside, install the washer if required and thread on the retaining nut. Tighten the nut to the manufacturer’s torque specification, typically between 35 and 80 inch-pounds. Do not over-tighten, as this can cause leaks. Reinstall the tire onto the wheel, starting opposite the sensor to avoid contact. Inflate the tire to seat the beads. Reinstall the valve core and inflate the tire to the recommended pressure. Balance the wheel. Reinstall the wheel onto the vehicle. Hand-tighten the lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and torque the lug nuts to specification. Finally, perform the TPMS relearn procedure if required. Some vehicles relearn automatically while driving, while others require a scan tool or manual relearn process.
