Cabo Verdean Creole The Cabo Verdean Creole is considered the oldest Creole language in the world by many subject matter experts. However, it is yet to be made an official language along with Portuguese. In 2009, the Cabo Verdean Alphabet was made official by Government decree. As a Portuguese-based Creole, naturally its writing system uses the Latin script. But what sets it apart is its phonetic-phonological principle — meaning each sound in the language is represented by exactly one letter. Additionally, West African languages are also found in some vocabulary as well as grammar and sentence structure of the Cabo Verdean Creole. There are nine mutually intelligible Cabo Verdean Creole variants that roughly divide into two dialectal continuums: Barlavento (northern islands) and Sotavento (southern islands). In spite of not being the official language of Cabo Verde, the Cabo Verdean Creole is deeply embedded in the daily lives of the Cabo Verdean people as the dominant language spoken outside of formal settings such as classrooms, governmental institutions, media, and published literature. Cabo Verdean People and Culture Cabo Verde is a relatively young nation that fought and won independence from Portuguese colonial rule on July 5, 1975. It’s a secular state and known as one of the most democratic countries in Africa. The majority of the population is Roman Catholic, followed by Protestants, and a much smaller population identifying with Islam. Music is the dominant form of cultural expression of the Cabo Verdean people and it is done so through the Creole language. The traditional music of morna, funana, batuku, koladera - just to mention a few, are paired with their respective traditional dances. The gastronomy is primarily influenced by West African and Portuguese cuisine, though it is said that there are influences from other parts of the world given the strategic location of Cabo Verde, particularly during the Transatlatic Slave Trade era. Katxupa is the national and traditional dish, which comes in four variations, namely: katxupa rika (rich katxupa), katxupa d’atum (tuna katxupa), katxupa pobre (poor katxupa), and katxupa guizod or rafugadu (fried katxupa). Grogu is the national rum. Through music, dance, food, and spirit drinks, those who visit Cabo Verde feel the morabeza. The Cabo Verdean people take that hospitality wherever they go, and as such, the cultural expressions and social norms are echoed throughout the Cabo Verdean Diaspora.
