Recently, I had the privilege of attending a hands-on workshop on Virtual Production, organized by the Mexican Society of Cinematography at the Churubusco studios. We dove into the fascinating world of In-Camera Visual Effects (ICVFX), a groundbreaking technology that projects environments created in Unreal Engine directly onto giant LED screens on set. ICVFX is an approach that has transformed film production by allowing actors and cameras to interact in real-time with virtual environments, reducing the need for green screens in many cases. This not only enhances visual authenticity and natural lighting in scenes but also speeds up the post-production process. This technique has been used in high-profile productions like The Mandalorian and The Batman, elevating the visual and creative quality of these projects. During the workshop, I had the opportunity to work with this technology in two scenarios: one in a car scene where we simulated movement through projected environments, and another inside an airplane hangar, which allowed for full visual immersion on set. It was an eye-opening experience that opens up new possibilities for the future of audiovisual production.
