The Ford City Mall opened at the site of a former WWII B-29 Bomber assembly plant which was built in 1942. The main assembly plant was cut in 2 forming an enclosed mall on one side and an open air shopping center on the other side. Both opened in 1965. A tunnel called The Connector and formerly known as Peacock Alley was created to connect both shopping centers. Accessible from the basement level of the mall, The Connector closed in 2012 forcing all tenants to the upper level of the mall. The mall opened with Wiebolt’s, Montgomery Ward and JCPenney as anchor stores. Turn Style occupied the east side of the shopping center later becoming a Venture then a Sears which closed in 2010. The former Montgomery Ward was demolished. In 2018 Carson Pirie Scott closed which occupied the Wiebolt’s building leaving JCPenney as the only remaining anchor. Ford City Mall has been remodeled twice. A 2-phase project in 2010-2011 and another in 2016. There’s room for 135 stores and services. It’s the largest mall in Chicago outside of the downtown area. The mall is owned by Namdar Reality Group.
