Stories of Valor - Lt. Michael P. Murphy

Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy was born in Smithtown, New York, in 1976 and raised in the nearby town of Patchogue. He was known for his intellect, sense of fairness, and quiet resolve. At Patchogue-Medford High School, he earned the nickname “The Protector” for standing up to bullies and defending classmates who were harassed or marginalized. He was a varsity athlete, a National Honor Society student, and someone others turned to when things got hard. He graduated from Penn State University with dual degrees in political science and psychology. He had been accepted to law school, but chose military service instead. In 2000, he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy. Two years later, he completed SEAL training—BUD/S Class 236—and joined what would become SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One, based out of Pearl Harbor. On June 28, 2005, Murphy led a four-man team into the mountains of eastern Afghanistan. The mission was called Operation Red Wings. Their objective was to conduct reconnaissance on a high-value Taliban leader in Kunar Province. It was a remote and hostile environment. Days into the mission, the team was discovered by local goatherds. Following the rules of engagement, they released them. What followed was a violent ambush by a force of over 50 enemy fighters. Murphy, along with teammates Danny Dietz, Matthew Axelson, and Marcus Luttrell, was pushed down the side of a steep mountainside while returning fire. Their communications were jammed. No reinforcements could be reached. Knowing his team would not survive without help, Murphy moved into an exposed position on high ground and attempted to establish contact with headquarters using a satellite phone. He was shot during the call but completed it. He returned to cover and continued fighting. Three of the four SEALs were killed. A Chinook helicopter sent for their rescue was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade, killing all 16 personnel onboard—eight Navy SEALs and eight Army Night Stalkers. It was the deadliest day for Naval Special Warfare since World War II. Murphy was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on October 22, 2007. He became the first member of the U.S. Navy to receive the nation’s highest military honor since the Vietnam War. Today, his name lives on: in the USS Michael Murphy (DDG-112), a guided-missile destroyer; in the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Combat Training Facility in Long Island; and in the annual “Murph Challenge,” completed by service members and civilians across the country every Memorial Day. But perhaps more than any monument, his leadership is best understood by the choices he made when it counted most: to take responsibility, to put others before himself, and to act with clarity in the face of chaos. At Mission to Commission, we preserve and elevate stories like Lt. Murphy’s—not to glorify sacrifice, but to understand it. To remind ourselves what leadership requires when the stakes are highest. He acted with full knowledge of the risk. He took responsibility when no one else could. He gave everything so others might live. That is what it means to lead. That is what it means to serve. Lt. Michael P. Murphy fulfilled his commission completely. We remember him—not just with words, but with the standard we uphold in his name.
