The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Osigwe, has ignited a national debate after alleging that court judgments are often shaped by bribes rather than evidence, describing the judiciary as facing a “moral crisis and a democratic emergency.” Citing a 2024 survey by the National Bureau of Statistics, he noted estimates that public officials, including judges, received ₦721 billion in bribes in 2023, and cited anti-corruption data indicating billions flowing through the justice sector in recent years. At the same time, figures from the Nigerian Correctional Service show that 64% of inmates nationwide are awaiting trial, with thousands held for years without conviction.
