the beauty of mainau island, germany #mainauisland Mainau is an island located in the city of Konstanz, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The island is owned by Lennart Bernadotte-Stiftung (The Lennart Bernadotte Foundation), a Swedish prince. The island is famous for its palace gardens with beautiful architecture, surrounded by colorful flower gardens and beautiful views of the lake. There is also a greenhouse with a tropical climate and thousands of butterflies of various types. HISTORY OF MAINAU ISLAND. The island of Mainau has interesting origins that date back to prehistoric times. A settlement of six houses has been excavated on the southern edge of the island dating from the Neolithic period. The island was then ruled, like almost everywhere else in Europe, by the Romans and then by the Alemanni Dukes and the Teutonic Order. Evidence of their rule of around 500 years can still be seen today in the island’s Baroque castles and churches. Their rule was broken for two years during the Thirty Years’ War (1618-48) when Sweden took over in 1647-9, leaving behind the so-called “Swedish cross,” cast in bronze at Constance in 1577, which today greets visitors to Mainau. The island then went through a period of uncertainty and decline, changing hands several times until it was finally acquired by Archduke Frederick I of Baden, who is considered the founder of the park. He not only established his summer residence here, but also began to landscape the island by redesigning it and planting rare exotic trees and plants, which he had brought back from his travels. Important parts of the Mainau park, such as the arboretum, the Italian rose garden and the greenhouse, date from this period, as do the first greenhouses for exotic plants and the first iron bridge connecting it to the mainland.
