Ed Sanders, the yodeler on "Yodeling Yippie" was the 2nd person I interviewed for my 1st yodel book, YODEL-AY-EE-OOOO. He is also very present in book 2: YODEL IN HIFI: From Kitsch Folk to Contemporary Electronica. There are few American cultural figures I admire more than Sanders. He combines what is most difficult in politics & entertainment: levity with gravity, sobriety with intoxication, logic with spiritual investigation & yodeling with a porcomorph! His interest in yodeling goes back to childhood. From YODEL-AY-EE-OOOO: " I got my yodeling . . . at country-western shows in auditoriums in Kansas City that I went to see ... I used to practice it when I became aware & got all of Jimmie Rodgers's records & Hank Williams's. I got just one or two of them & I used to listen to'm and practice with my autoharp and . . . I sorta had an Irish tenor, in a way. Of course I hit all the notes so, on 1 record in 1969 [The Belle of Avenue A (Reprise)] I did this tune called "Yodeling Yippie" [about] a guy riding the airlines to take part in anti-war protests like a cowboy riding a horse only he rides the airlines." When they were thinking of a name for the band that eventually became the Fugs, Sanders in his new new auto-bio-history FUG YOU recounts: "An early [name] I came up with was 'The Yodeling Socialists.'
