The Cirque de Gavarnie is an amphitheatre-shaped valley formed by glacial erosion in the central Pyrénées, Southwestern France, by the border of Spain. It is located in the department of Hautes-Pyrénées, and the Pyrénées National Park. It is home to the tallest waterfall in mainland France, with an overall drop of 422 m (1,385 ft). The cirque is 800 m wide (on the deepest point) and about 3,000 m wide at the top. The rock walls that surround it are up to 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) above the floor of the cirque. Several rare plants and animals live on the peaks at the upper rim of the Cirque de Gavarnie, protected by French and Spanish national parks.
