In an effort to expand its operations, the Great Eastern Railway (GER) selected a site on reclaimed land at Ray Farm—about a mile west of Harwich—to construct a new port. This location became Parkeston Quay, which officially opened in 1883, complete with its own railway station and a hotel (later repurposed as office space). The railway played a crucial role in the quay’s development, managing both passenger and freight services, especially those connecting to continental ferry routes. Originally named Parkeston Quay, the station was renamed Harwich Parkeston Quay in 1934 when Parkeston Quay West station was introduced to serve the quay’s western section. In 1995, it was renamed once more to Harwich International. These brief shots taken in 1994 show typical operations taking place in this busy port Today, the port continues to serve as a major transport hub, accommodating a wide range of ferry and freight traffic.
