#Ferrara, #Castelloestense, #Emilia-Romagna Ciao belli! How are you! Be ready to discover with me Ferrara, a great Renaissance city! Ferrara sits near a branch of the Po river, approximately 50 kilometers north-east of Bologna, the capital of Emilia Romagna region, and it remains a kind of a hidden secret! In order to understand the history of Ferrara I have to mention briefly that Italy was once a patchwork of small countries and city-states ruled by the aristocrats of the time like the Medici in Florence, the Sforza in Milan, the Gonzaga in Mantua etc... Even the Pope, who ruled the Catholic Church, also ruled the Stato della Chiesa (Church State) with Rome as its capital. In the same way Ferrara was ruled from the 12th to the 15th century by the famous Este family. The Este were enlightened patrons, passionate about art, music, painting, literature and architecture but also attentive diplomats capable of weaving international relations of the highest level, vital for the survival of their small and powerful state. Initially, they lived in a modest-looking castle, but in 1385 when discontent grew as a result of tax increases by the family, the palace was fortified by Nicolò 1st d’Este (nicknamed “lo zoppo”, “the lame”). With four towers, a moat and drawbridge, it would have taken a significant attack to break through these walls. Today the Castello Estense rises fully intact in the center of the city with his incredible structure made of red bricks and the moat full of water. Once in town I’ll suggest you wear comfy shoes as that inner-city streets are paved by round river stones not always easy to walk on it. Despite that, the city center is basically a huge pedestrian area, so everybody walks everywhere or rides a bike. Do what locals do then: stroll around or rent a bike! The main square in Ferrara, Piazza Trento e Trieste, is not far from the castle and is the liveliest part of town. Surrounded by the San Giorgio Cathedral and the Ferrara City Hall, it’s a place to catch up with friends at one of the many bars and cafes. The cathedral is known to be impressive due to its blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. At the time of this video was closed to public due to internal restoration works. Since the Middle Age the right side of the cathedral is flanked by the ancient merchant’s shops tucked beneath the tiled roofs. It’s so charming! Strolling around Ferrara don’t miss the city walls as they are very picturesque. I personally biked on top of it and I loved it. Thankfully, the city of Ferrara is now part of the UNESCO world heritage list, meaning these walls and everything else inside will be preserved for future generations. What about local food? You must try at least the following specialties: Cappellacci alla zucca: kind of big tortellini with pumpkin filling. Pasticcio Ferrarese: a sweet & savory pasta pie without tomato sauce but enriched by bechamel sauce, mushroom and truffle. Salama da sugo: a local pork sausage, cured for a very long time and cooked for hours. It’s extremely savory! Usually it’s served with a plain mash potato. These dishes go together with a nice glass of local red Lambrusco wine for a perfect combination. Enjoy the video! Un bacio. Sergio Music: https://www.purple-planet.com
